pedni.com: What & Why

pedni.com is a distribution channel for my creative writing. I began writing fiction and poetry in August 2014 and my brief but eventful track record includes the following (all are manuscripts, less the novella published on pedni):

  • Fiction:
    • Short stories: 18
    • Novellas: 4
    • Novel: 1
    • Radio play: 1
    • Flash fiction:
      • Up to 100 words: 7
      • 100 to 1000 words: 7
  • Poems: 25

This inventory has helped me participate in numerous writing competitions. I’ve also participated in two literary festivals (Jaipur and Bengaluru). In the process, I’ve closely assessed the business of publishing. While it is common knowledge that the publishing industry is undergoing fundamental changes, what is often overlooked is the opportunities created by the upheaval. pedni.com is an effort to capitalize on these opportunities, particularly that of eliminating middlemen (whose value addition is usually dubious).

Here’s another way to understand the motivation behind this website: since writing is craft, pedni is my workshop. It is meant to provide space for interaction between the two key constituents of any economic relationship: the producer and the consumer. What will be missing is the noise of the marketplace (if you’re thinking of the A-to-Z hegemon, we’re in sync), hopefully creating the conditions for music to permeate This space.

If that sounds like highfalutin talk, here’s what matters to you: being an independent author gives me unlimited power, which allows me to offer you unlimited (in a manner of speaking) choice. For instance, I’m able to offer Another Attempt (my first publication on pedni) for free (forever), something I wouldn’t be permitted to do on Amazon, which only allows short duration promotions at zero price. This is but a ready example of the freedom I’m able to exercise over my creative output. Shortly I will be discussing my approach to pricing - not coincidentally, heavily skewed in favor of the reader - which should provide the strongest proof of the power underlying freedom of action.

Why didn't I include comments natively on pedni? Spam. Commenting systems try to get around the problem with inefficient solutions which annoy readers who are keen to have their say in the easiest way possible. While messaging your comments isn't the ideal solution, it will definitely resolve the problem of spam. And I promise to publish all comments, be they critical or supportive of my work.
